Start with whether there is power at the water
Dewatering happens where the water is, and that is frequently not where the supply is. Early-phase construction, mine sites running ahead of grid infrastructure, agricultural abstraction points and pipeline rights of way all share the same characteristic: the duty exists before the electrical supply does.
Running cable to the pump is sometimes the answer and sometimes not. A long temporary run has its own cost, its own voltage drop, and its own exposure to plant traffic. Where the supply is marginal or distant, a diesel package removes the question entirely.
Where adequate supply already exists at or near the duty point, the calculation reverses and electric is usually the better answer for the reasons below.
When diesel is the right choice
A diesel package is self-contained. It starts and runs independently of site power, which makes it the default for remote sites, early works, emergency response and any duty that has to begin before infrastructure arrives.
It is also the choice when the pump has to move. On a mine site the working face advances; on a pipeline the work moves along the right of way; in flood response the unit goes where the water is. A diesel unit on a wheeled or skid chassis can be repositioned without re-establishing a supply each time.

When electric is the right choice
Where supply exists, electric drive lowers running cost and removes refuelling from the daily routine — which on a continuous duty is a labour and logistics saving as much as a fuel one, and removes the risk of a pump stopping because a delivery did not arrive.
It also produces no emissions at the point of use and runs considerably quieter, which is what makes it the practical answer for fixed installations, enclosed spaces, urban works and any site operating under noise or air quality restrictions.

The chassis is part of the same decision
How the unit is mounted follows from how it will be used, and it interacts with the drive choice more than people expect.
Skid-mounted units suit duties that stay put for a period but may be lifted between locations. Wheeled site chassis suit frequent repositioning under a site vehicle. Static installation suits a permanent duty, which in practice usually means electric. A sound-attenuated enclosure is what makes a diesel unit acceptable where noise is restricted — worth specifying up front rather than discovering it is needed after a complaint.
Jobs that change part-way through
A common pattern is a site that begins with no power and acquires it. Dewatering starts under diesel because it has to, and months later there is a supply fifty metres away and the duty is still running.
If you can see that coming, say so at the quotation stage. The hydraulic selection does not change — the duty point is the duty point — but knowing the power situation will change affects what is sensible to specify around it.
The reverse also happens: a duty that was expected to be short-term and mains-fed turns into a long deployment somewhere less convenient. Neither case is unusual and neither is a problem if it is anticipated.
What to check before you commit
For electric: the available supply capacity at the duty point, not at the site entrance. The cable run length and route. Whether the supply is stable enough for continuous operation, and what happens to the duty if it fails.
For diesel: refuelling access and frequency, whether a bunded arrangement is required, service access for the engine, and any noise or emissions limits that apply at the boundary rather than at the pump.
For both: what the consequence of an unplanned stop actually is. Where stopping means flooding rather than delay, redundancy is worth more than any efficiency difference between drive types.
